(Received June 11, 7.45 p.m.) Chicago telegrams state that indications point to General Pershing os a dark horse candidate for the Democratic Presidential nomination. The dissensions between Senator Johnson and Major-General Wood is growing. The League of Nations’ issue threatens to split the Republican convention. Senators Johnson and Borah demand the flat rejection of the Versailles Treaty. Mr W. M. Crane favours ratification with minor reservations, and Senator Reed Smoot proposes a conference approving of the Senators resisting ratification without their agreement in order to protect the liberty and independence of Americans. TIIE REPUBLICAN PLATFORM. OPPOSITION TO THE TREATY. NEW YORK, June 11. (Received June 11, 10.10 p.m.l The New York Times’ Chicago correspondent reports that the Republican party approves of the Senate’s refusal to ratify the Treaty of Versailles. Other planks in the Republican platform include no strikes against the Government and private ownership of railways. The Republican Party, in a plank favouring a liberal foreign policy with firm adherence to American rights. together with respect for the rights of others, condemned President Wilson for asking for a mandate over Armenia, adding that the party would hereafter oppose a mandate for any country in. Europe or Asia. The Republican Party stands for agreement among I lie nations to preserve the peace of the world, and believes that an international association must bo based upon international justice and must provide methods which shall maintain the rule of public right by the development of law ami the decision of impartial courts which shall secure an instant international conference whenever peace is threatened.
