BIG STRIKE THREATENED. MELBOURNE LIGHT AND POWER EMPLOYEES. (By Telegraph..— Press Assn.—Copyright.) (Australian and N.Z. Cable Association.) MELBOURNE, June 10. (Received June 10, 11.30 p.m.) The Federated Engine-drivers’ and Firemen’s Association, and the Fllectric Light and Gasworks’ Employees’ Union have sent an ultimatum to the employers demanding increased wages, and stating that if they are not granted they will cease work at midnight on Saturday. If the threat is carried into effect it is estimated that 50,000 men will be rendered idle in the first week, as the factory enginedrivers belong to the Association. COMPULSORY ARBITRATION. ‘■EQUIVALENT TO SERFDOM.” MR COMPERE’ OPINION. NEW YORK, June 10. (Received June 10, 11.20 p.m.) Mr Gompers told the platform committee at Chicago that legislation proposing to make strikes unlawful or compel the workers to submit their grievances to the courts was an invasion of the rights of the workers and if enforced would be equivalent to serfdom and slavery.
