CONDITIONS IN AMERICA

AN AUSTRALIAN’S IMPRESSIONS. DANGERS IN THE PACIFIC. (By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—copyright.) (Australian and N.Z. Cable Association.) SYDNEY, June 10. Mr Cornforth, managing director of the Vacuum Oil Company, who has returned from a six months’ visit to the United States, deprecated the Australasian opinion that America did not care a fig for the League of Nations. He found she did care but objected to the inclusion of clause in the League which would inevitably- embroil the United States in war in Europe. Mr Cornforth declared that President Wilson w;is the best-hated man in America and had no chance of being returned at the Presidential elections.

Regarding the Pacific, he found influential American opinion favoured an alliance between Australia and America in view of their common peril. The menace was considered a very live one indeed anti Americans look for some move on the part of Australia and New Zealand towards union, having: with its object mutual protection against potential dangers in Pacific waters. A source of wonder among Americans was that Australia and New Zealand failed to arrange direct exchange with America instead of paying fifteen per cent, extra for goods owing to exchange through London.

Industrially and commercially the United States was in a state of great unrest and extremely hard times were ahead, chiefly as a result of the tightening of the money market, the scarcity of raw material arid the shortage of labour.
