FREE STEAMER PASSAGES. CHAMBER OF COMMERCE DISAPPROVAL. (Per United Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, June 9. At a meeting of the Canterbury Chamber of Commerce council on Monday, a letter j was received from the Prime Minister in rei ply to a question as to whether a paragraph , appearing in the newspapers some time ago | that members of Parliament had been granti ed free steamer passages by, the Union ComI pany to Wellington, stating that the paraI graph was correct. The following resolution j has been forwarded to the Prime Minister:— ‘‘That this council views with the strongest ( disapprobation and regret the Prime Minis- I ter’s application to the Union Steamship j Company for free passages for members of the Legislature when travelling between Lyttelton and Wellington, and affirms the principle that under no circumstances should any member of the Legislature as such be placed [ under a private and personal obligation to j the proprietor or proprietors of any private ; business carried on in New Zealand, and i that the proper travelling expenses of all i members of Parliament should, as represen- 1 tatives of the whole Dominion, be paid from | the Consolidated Fund,”
