AN EXPIRED LEASE
SOLDIERS’ PROTEST, LANDS COMMISSIONER’S STATEMENT Yesterday a reporter called on the Commissioner of Crown Lands (Mr T. Brook) with a request that he should make a .statement regarding the complaints voiced at a meeting of soldier settlers at Tuatapere in connection with the non-subdivision of the pastoral run adjoining Mr Cuthbert’s “Sunnyside” property. At this meeting it was stated that returned soldiers had expected to have an opportunity of acquiring some of the land, but now it had been released to Mr Cuthbert in consequence of a report by members of the Land Board. It was also stated that the run was eminently suited for sub-division. Mr Brooks said that all pastoral runs were reported on twelve months before the expiry of the lease, and the usual course had been followed in this case. The report was not favourable to sub-division, and the run had been re leased to Mr Cuthbert. The soldiers had no grounds for supposing that the run was to be sub-divided. The question of suitability for sub-division was a matter of opinion.
