OBITUARY
SIR CHARLES MATTHEWS. (By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright.) (The Times.) LONDON, June G. (Received June 7, S p.m.) The death is announced of Sir Charles Mathews, the Public Prosecutor.
The Right Hon. ijir Charles Mathews, was a stepson of Charles James Mathews, the comedian, whose name he assumed by deed poll. He was bom in 1850 and educated at Eton, and was called to the Bar at the Middle Temple in 1872. In 1880 he was appointed junior counsel to the Treasury at the Central Criminal Court, and in ISSS senior counsel. He was Recorder of Salisbury from ISUS to 1008, when he became Director of Public Prosecutions. Sir Charles was created a baronet in 1917. MISS RIIODA BROUGHTON. (The 'Times.) LONDON, June 6. (Received June 7, S p.m.) Rhotia Broughton, the novelist, is dead. Miss Broughton was born in North Wales in 1840. She was author of a large number of popular novels. THE PREMIER OF PORTUGAL. LISBON, June 6. (Received June 7, 5.50 p.m.) The Premier, Colonel Antonio Baptist a, died suddenly during a Cabinet meeting.
