THE SMALLPOX EPIDEMIC.
To the Editor. Sir,—ln the Borough Inspector’s report submitted to the Council this week (a copy of which Is to be sent to the Minister of Public Health! the following sentence appears: “The town was never more cleanly than it is at present.” It therefore must have been a rude shock to the people of Invercargill to learn on reading the leader in yesterday’s Times that the northern newspapers were crediting Invercargill with the present outbreak of smallpox in the south. The majority of the people in the north will readily believe this statement as they think no good thing can come out of Invercargill. For our own sake, then and in fairness to Southland it is to be hoped that the Mayor and Councillors will act at once and pass a suitable resolution which will be heralded throughout New Zealand ami thus contradict the false report . Our reputation being at stake and as silence gives consent, we must act now.—l am, etc., FAIRPLAY. Invercargill, June 2. 1020.
