FRENCH TURF SCANDAL

(Received June 4, 12.5 a.m.) The Daily Chronicle’s Paris correspondent reports that a turf scandal has been revealed at St. Cloud as the result of a jockey accused of pulling a favourite admitting that he was guilty and pleading that other jockeys al-n received bribes from bookmakers. Investigation showed that although bookmaking is illegal, £400,000 is Iveing placed with bookmakers every day. The bookmakers have an army of touts in cafes and restaurants. Certain jockeys have been participating in the bookmakers’ profits after pulling heavily backed horses. It is now proposed to open totalisator offices in Paris, ami to impose heavy increases, in tiie |>enalties against bookmakers in order to stop bookmaking.
