SMALLPOX
NO CASES YESTERDAY. EDUCATION BOARD’S PRECAUTIONS. No fresh cases of smallpox were notified to the Health authorities yesterday, and large numbers of people are availing themselves of the opportunity of becoming vaccinated in order to combat the disease. The Southland Education Board is also co-operating with the Health Department in preventing the spread of the disease and yesterday the following letter was issued to the head teachers of all local primary and secondary schools:—“Dr Ritchie, of the Health Department is making arrangements so that pupils, provided they obtain the consent of their parents or guardians, can be vaccinated at their school.” "I have to ask you that you will be good enough to inform the pupils attending your school of the arrangements being made by the Health Department for those who have not already been vaccinated. ‘‘Only in cases where the written consent of i.he parents or guardians is produced will the Department act.
“Your hearty co-operation in combating the spread of chicken-pox and smallpox will be appreciated. "Dr Ritchie will call on you in the course of a few days.”
