A Melbourne Press Association cable rfi-> ports the death of Mr Melhuish, financial editor of the Argus. The Sydney newspapers pay lengthy tributes to the late Dr G. E. Morrison, says a Press Association message. A Sydney Press Association message states that Mr Hughes despatched a farewell message to General Birdwood, expressing appreciation of his visit to Australia.

■A Press Association cable states that Sydney suffers a severe loss through Professor Wilson’s acceptance of the Chair of Anatomy at Cambridge University. He recently succeeded to the position of Dean of the Faculty of Medicine.

At last night’s meeting of the Town Council it was decided to tender General Sir William Birdwood a civic reception on his arrival in Invercargill, and the matter was left in the hands of the Mayor (Mr John Stead l and the chairmen of the various committees with power to act. Dr C. J. Brakes, head of the Agricultural Department, has been appointed the first commissioner to represent N.Z. in administration of the.Nauru Island phosphate production and supply. He will take charge of the business during the initial stages only.

The Timaru Borough Council on Monday night, from 32 applicants, appointed Mr G. T. Wilson, late electrical engineer for Hamilton Borough Council, to the position of Borough Electrical Engineer, and Mr W. A. Mowat, formerly of the Navy, to the position of power-house engineer. There were 33 applicants for the latter position. The International Postal Congress will be held in Madrid commencing on October 1. A Wellington Press Association telegram states that the Cabinet has decided that New Zealand should be represented, and the new Secretary (Mr R. B. Morris) is to leave Wellington at the end of the month to connect with the Niagara at Auckland, proceeding to Europe via America. During (he absence of Mr Morris the duties of Secretary of (he Department will devolve upon Mr A. T. Markmann, First Assistant Secretary.

The sudden death of Mr Harry Hansen occurred at Stewart Island on Monday. Deceased was the eldest son of the late Captain and Mrs Hansen of Oban House and was a well known figure at the Island. The late Mr Hansen followed (he sea and for a number of years was skipper of the Nile, trading between the Island and Bluff. In later years Mr Hansen turned his attention to deep sea fishing, and it is safe to say that he knew the best grounds all round the Island. Last year Mr Hansen took over Oban House and store, having decided on a less strenuous life than fishing. He leaves a widow and three children.
