IMPERIAL PREFERENCE
WEST INDIES AND CANADA. CONFERENCE AT OTTAWA. (By Telegraph.-—Press Assn. —Copyright.) (Australian and N.Z. Cable Association.) OTTAWA, May 31. In welcoming West Indian delegates to a conference for closer trade relations with Canada the Duke of Devonshire pointed out that the real question at issue was that of making the future of the Empire secure. If the Empire were self-supporting security would be unquestionable. Colonel Amery, representing the Colonial Office, emphasised (he Imperial aspect of the conference and said he hoped the outcome would be the widening of existing trade preference between the dominion and the West Indies. The Hon. E. St. .John Branch, AttorneyGeneral for Jamaica, stated that the colony was prepared to enter whole-hcar.edly into any great scheme for the consolidation of the Empire.
Representatives from all the West Indies were present.
