INCREASE OF POPULATION

IMPROVEMENT IN BIRTH RATE.

WELLINGTON, May 2G. An increase of 9,744 in the European population of the Dominion during the quarter ended March 31 is shown by the Government Statistician’s records. The total population now is 1,154.139, compared with 1,095,994 in 1914. Including Maoris and Pacific Islanders it is 1,236,712. Details are:—

Population on March 31, 1920—Males, 594,555 ; females, 597,584. Maori population (census 1916) —Males, 25,993; females, 23,843. Population of Pacific Islands (census 1916 i —Males, 6,552 ; females, 6,245. The Acting-Government Statistician draws attention to the fact that the improvement in the birth rate disclosed by the figures for the quarter ended December 31, 1919, has been fully maintained during the quarter ended March 31, when the number of births registered was 7,531, an increase of 1,470 over the corresponding quarter of 1917. The birth rate for the quarter is equal to an annual rate of 25.85 per 1000 of the mean population as compared with a rate of only 21.55 for the year 1919.
