A CUSTOMS ANOMALY

BASIS OF DUTY.

PRESENT OR ORIGINAL VALUES

(Per United Press Association.)

CFIRISTCHURCH, May 26,

The following telegram will be sent by Mr L. M. lain, M.P., to the Prime Minister; —"A Christchurch merchant showed me today an invoice of a parcel of English goods landed on April 20. The price was £3l 7s. Tito Customs Department has charged duty on the present-day value, £4l 7«. The merchant asks what possible justification the Government has in charging duty on the present-day value, £lO more than he paid, while he is prohibited from putting Ids profit on the present-day value. If it is profiteering to charge on present-day value is not the Government adding to the cost of living and profiteering when it is charging duty on a value the producer does nut receive, the merchant docs not pay, and the Government, although charging duty on it, refuses to recognise. If the profit on the present-day value is wrong how can duty on the present-day value bo right?”
