RIOTS AT LONDONDERRY. MILITARY PRECAUTIONS. (By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright.) (Australian and N.Z. Coble Association.) LONDON, May 16. Four hours’ rioting occurred at Londonderry on Saturday night between Sinn Feiners and Unionists. A hundred shots were fired. The police, fixing bayonets, charged the, rioters. Detective Moroney was fatally wounded and a civilian was critically hurt. Rioting at Londonderry lasted until the early morning. The troops were called out and separated the rival factions. They then drew cordons round the troubled areas and conducted a systematic search for arms. The violence then gradually subsided. Firearms were used with alarming frequency by both sides. Amongst the casualties there were three deaths, and others* were seriously wounded. Large quantities of barbed wire are arriving in Ireland. It is believed to be connected with the new military preparations and blockhouse system. A Lancer patrol is now employed in the west and south to prevent cuttle driving. Considerable areas in the west and south are subjected to so-called Binn Feiners’ courts, which are unceasingly arresting, trying, and sentencing offenders for crimes. The Sinn Fein hunger strikers have now been released from Wormwood Scrubs prison and sent to a large hospital. They became indignant because of a temporaiy shortage of food at the midday meal and quitted the hospital in a body after reducing the nurses to tears at their unreasonableness. They have not yet returned. The authorities of the hospital say that they have no power to compel the prisoners to stay if they are dissatisfied. A LIMERICK MURDER. EX-SINN FEINER SHOT. LONDON, May 16. (Received May 17, 8 p.m.) Nine men fatally shot James Dalton, a clerk, on leaving an hotel in Clare street, Limerick, in daylight. Dalton was formerly a prominent Sinn Feinor. He was shot in the hand some weeks ago, afterwards receiving warning, "A bullet is awaiting Dalton, the spy.”
