THE LOCAL MARKETS. Times Office, Saturday, May 15. . GENERAL MERCHANDISE. Glaxo has advanced and the retail prices are now 8/-, 3/- and 1/6 for large, medium and small respectively. The local market is very bare of syrup and treacle pending the arrival of the Wanaka. Supplies of Australian confectionery are now coming on the market. Supplies of yellow Three Castle tobacco are due next week. Morton’s Epsom salts are again available and arc being quoted at 5/6 per box. CURRENT PRICES. The following are current prices quoted by a retailer:— —Wholesale. —• Eggs, 2/8. Bacon, 1/7. Butter—Farm 1/3, separator 1/4, factory 1/6*. Pollard, £lO per ton. Bran, £8 per ton. Flour, £l7 10/- to £2O 10/-. . Oatmeal, £3l 10/- to £35. Potatoes, £7 to £8 10/- per ton. —Retail.— Eggs, 3/-. Bacon, 1/10. Butter—Farm 1/4, separator 1/9, factory 1/8 net cash, 1/8* booked. Pollard, 12/- per 100. Flour—2s’s 5/9, 50’s 11/-, 100’s 21/6, 200's 39/-; Oatmeal—2s’s 9/3, 50’s 18/-. Potatoes, 10/- to 11/- per cwt. Kerosene, 12/3 and 24/-. FRUIT AND VEGETABLES. Very heavy supplies' of fruit have been coming forward, principally of pears and epples. Owing to the cold weather there has been a poor demand and values have declined considerably. Tomatoes are now finished except for a few local hothouse grown. Following are the approximate wholesale prices:— Apples, dessert, Delicious 3*d to 4d per ib, Jonathans 7/- to 9/- per case, Scarlets to 8/-, cookers 4/6 to 6/-; pears, choice dessert, Winter Nells 8/- to 10/-, Coles 6/- to 8/-, inferior 4/- to 6/-, cookers 4/- to 5/6; tomatoes, lOd to 1/-; Island oranges, re-packs 25/- per case; Mission brand lemons 60/- (double cases), passion fruit 10/- to' 12/6 per box. Increasing supplies of vegetables are coming to hand, and a shipment of pie melons is due by the Wanaka at Bluff on Monday. Approximate wholesale prices rule as follow: —Cabbage, 5/6 to 7/- per sack; cauliflower, 6/- to 10/- per dozen; parsnips, 6/per sack; carrots, 8/- per sack; marrows, 9/- per cwt; pie melons, 2d per lb. FISH. There have been fairly good supplies of diflerent varieties all the week. HARDWARE. Some shipments of hardware hfivo reached the southern markets recently, but appear to have gone into consumption quickly. Corrugated iron is being sold at £BO, and is still in good demand. Cement, as mentioned last week, has been raised 6d per bag and is being sold at 7/10. Black fencing wire is still being sold at 40/-, but galvanised shows a still further advance and is being quoted at as high as 06/-. Barbed wire appears to be still unprocurable, although a small shipment is reported to have reached the Dunedin market, being readily sold at £65 per ton. Rabbit-netting is being sold at from 1/3 to 1/4 per yard.

McKAY BROS.’ REPODT. Messrs McKay Bros, report as follows; Pigs to £2 13/-; good demand. Bowls—Pullets-, 9/6; fowls, 1/4 to 1/6. Bacon Pigs—Consignments wanted; high prices ruling. Produce.—Potato market easier, £8 to £S 10/-; onions, 12/- cwt ; pickling onions, 2d per lb; pollard, IS/6; bran, 9/-; oats, 22/6 to 25/u; barley meal, 17/6; oat dust, 5/6; cabbage, 6/-; prime chaff, £8 5/-. Bruit. —-Good supplies of apples and pears to hand; also Island oranges. Melons are due to arrive Monday. Tomatoes are about finished. Prices ruling for week ;—Dessert apples 10/- to 12/-, cooking apples 7/- to 9/-; tomatoes, 4d to 6d; pears, dessert 10/6, cooking pears 7/-; pic melons, 2id per lb; Island oranges, 25/- to 30/-; lemons, 50/to 60/-; quinces, 2id per lb; peanuts, 10id per lb. General.—Cow-covers, IS/6 ; horse-covers, 47/6. Purniture.—Good demand for all classes of furniture and business has been good in this department throughout the week. Attention is drawn to advertising columns re outside sales on Monday and Tuesday on account of Mr T. Rodgers and Mr lie ward (J. Poster respectively.

BRAY BROS.’ REPORT. Messrs Bray Bros., Ltd., auctioneers, report as follows for week ending May 15: We have received large consignments of potatoes, onions, oats, and chaff during the week. There has been a good enquiry for all produce lines and prices remain practically unaltered. Heavy fruit consignments have been received and prices have shown considerable variation according to variety and grade of fruit. Vegetables have come to hand in fair quantities and are readily sold at market rates. The week closed with prices ruling as follows; — Potatoes to . £S 10/- per ton. Onions —13/- per cwt. Supplies are more than equal to the demand, the market shows a weaker tendency. Tomatoes and stone fruits have about finished. A few quinces are still coming forwar^. The week closed with prices ruling:—Apples, dessert 2id to 3d lb, cookers 2d to 2id lb; pears, dessert 5/- to 9/- case, cookers 5/- to 6/- case; tomatoes, 2d ‘to 3d lb; peaches. 3d to 3id lb; Island oranges, repacks 25/- case, Sydney oranges 18/- case; passion fruit, 10/ -half-case; grapes, 1/3 to 1/5 lb; quinces, 2Jd to 3d lb. Vegetables, Plants, etc. —Rhubarb roots 5/- doz; currant trees, 7/- doz; thyme, 6d root; potatoes, 9/- cwt; cabbage, 3/6 to 6/6 bag; carrots and parsnips, 3/- dozen bunches; red cabbage, 10/6 cwt; onions, 13/- cwt. , THE DUNEDIN MARKETS. DUNEDIN, May 15. The bulk of the wheat has been harvested, and only odd lines are now offering. Local millers are short of supplies, and aro looking to Canterbury for further parcels. Fowl wheat is very scarce, and poultry growers are turning their attention to short oats. The local Government fixed prices for May are as follow: —Velvet or pearl, 7/11; Hunters, 7/8; Tuscan, 7/s—all f.0.b., sacks extra (the prices include 14d per bushel brokerage). Millers’ prices are as follow; Flour, £l6 10/- to £l7 per ton; 100’s, £lB to £lB 10/-; 50’s, £lB 10/- to £l9; 25’s, £l9 10/to £2O. Bran, £8 per ton. Pollard, £lO. Pearl barley, £35. Oatmeal, £3l to £33 per ton After a long period of quietness the shipping market for oats has become more active, and several sales have been made during the week. For prompt shipment 5/10, f.0.b.5.i., has been realised, and merchants are now asking 5/11 to 6/-. North Island merchants also seem anxious to cover forward deliveries, May onwards, and there are buyers to-day at 5/10 to 5/10 i, f.o.b.s.i. Shipping values are now equivalent to prices being paid to growers, who have been firm holders at 5/1 to 5/2 per bushel, sacks extra, on trucks, country sidings. OAMARU MARKETS. OAMARU, May 15. There has been little doing in the grain market during the week. The largest line of wheat that changed hands was 700 sacks of Velvet.- Other small transactions are recorded. The storage difficulty is hampering what little business remains to be transacted in the district. Lines of A grade Gartons ranging from 200 to 400 sacks changed hands at 5/to 5/1, and of B at 4/11 to 5/-, all on trucks. No business is passing in grass or clover seed. Potatoes are in little demand.

LIVERPOOL WOOL SALES. <

At the Liverpool wool sales there was a moderate attendance and fair competition for good greasy combing Merinos, the Continent operating freely in. faulty Merinos and fine crossbreds. Prices for fine crossbreds and best greasy Merinos were at par with London closing rates. Medium greasy Merino declined 5 per cent.; scoureds, 5 to 10; fine and medium greasy crossbreds, 5 to 74. Scoured slipes are irregular, and there were heavy withdrawals of low qualities. The Bradford market is quiet, but more settled; sixty-four’s, 144 d; fifty-six’s, 90d; fifties, 68d; forty-six’s, 41d.
