MIDDLE SCHOOL.
To the Editor. Sir,—Some remarks of mine made at the Middle School householders’ meeting reported in your columns have not been quite clearly understood by a section of the community ; with your permission 1 shall endeavour to make the matter clear. The paragraph reported was portion, of a speech in which I made reference to the very unsuitable, old and cramped building doing service as an infant school and had no reference whatever to the teachers or teaching methods. As a member of the committee I know that at the present time the school has one of the most efficient staffs in Southland and the most efficient the school has had for many years if not the very best it has ever had. The examination results bear out this statement. The infant department under the able guidance of a very efficient infant mistress and staff of assistants with its Montessori department is one of the show places of the Education Board. Why the board which knows and appreciates the excellent work being carried on allows this work to be hampered by the present building is beyond our committee.—l am, eta, A. R GARDNER.
