UNITED STATES NAVY
ADMIRAL SIMS’ CHARGES. VIOLENT REPLY BY MR DANIELS. (By Telegraph.—Press Assn. —Copyright.) (Australian and N.Z. Cable Association.) WASHINGTON, May 10. Mr Daniels, Secretary to the Navy, replying to Admiral Sims’s naval criticism, said that Admiral Sims lacked vision. He belittled the navy’s work while extolling the British Navy. He was covered with British decorations and refused to co-operate with the Department. His great ambition was to become an honorary member of the British Admiralty. The officers supporting Admiral Sims’s charges were largely people with grievances. Admiral Sims never hesitated to urge the views of the Admiralty as against those of the United States Naval Department. He minimised everything the United States Navy did. Admiral Sims attacked the Irish people as unpatriotic. If the Department had known that his published articles were to include this attack it would have refused permission for publication. Mr Daniels highly praised Admiral Benson, and pointed out that the United States was so far effective in the war that “the world marvelled at its accomplishments, which will thrill unborn generations.”
