BILLIARDS
MeCONACHY MAKES A BIG BREAK. The record break of the New Z-caland billiard champion, Clark McConachy, is 1083, and it looked to the large crowd gathered in the Grand saloon last night as if he was on a fair way to exceed this score, when, through a spectator rising at the far cud of the table, his attention was distracted, and the break ended for 604. In this game Me Co a achy was playing Mr P. Cooke, described as “the Invercargill champion,” giving him 550 on in 1000 up. Cooke had eight shots, averaging the commendable score of 14 against his doughty opponent. Then cams the New Zealand champion’s chance. A few cannons, and the white was potted. Then came one of the prettiest displays of work with the red ever witnessed locally. McConachy had the strength of the table—a standard Alcock —to a nicety, and he played the shot that made Grey famous with rare judgment. In off the red in the centre pocket and then into the bottom pocket the ball went, no fewer than 573 being put up in this way. Then happened the incident already mentioned, and the scores ended; McConachy 1014; Cooke 604. McConachy had two difficult corners to get out of in the course of the break. Later McConachy had a snooker contest with Mr J. Neshit, the local man making a splendid showing. The game ended a drew, and it was decided to play the black to win. McConachy, playing a good double, won the game.
