SPORTING.

NOTES BY SIR MOORED,

The South Canterbury J.C.’s Autumn meeting opens to-morrow on the W ashdyke course at Timaru and extends over Thursday. The fixture was originally designed to take place later in the week, but was speeded up to enable those concerned to reach Christchurch in ample time to assist at the Royal gathering at Riccarton on Saturday next. An interesting race on the opening occasion of the Kgmont R.C.'s \\ inter meeting to-rnorrow will be the Kgmont Steeplechase, £SOO I about two and a half miles), in which a field of fifteen claim engagements. The handicap list is headed by the Australianbred Old Mungindi, who won the \ .R.C. Grand National Steeplechase at Flemington in 1917, under 11.0. He was brought to New Zealand by Mr W. R. Kemball some time back and may ran well under 12.0, as he is likely to strip in better shape than the majority of his rivals. The Otago-owned Lochella will probably be a .-tarter in the Tongahoe Hurdles Handicap (one mile and three-quarters) at the Kgmont fixture to-morrow. The representative of Mr R. Acton-Adams is evidently to be raced, into form in view of the Great Northern Steeplechase, to be decided early next momh. At the same time, Lochella has an .'inside chance in the hurdle event at Kgmont with in.ld, as he can muster up considerably more pace than he is generally given credit, for. Th.' death of Mr Duncan McGregor at Cemre Bush last week at the advanced age of St; vine, may he said to remove one of the landmark- of the Sour.hland light harmss world;, id " in the early days of the st.ort in the south rise deceased sportsman brought many well-bred horses here and at the same time raced quite a number of useful net-formers in Otago and Canterbury on occasions. In addition to racing trotters and: pacers he maintained a small stud at Centre Bush, where Stirling Lad reigned a? lord, of the harem, and some smart horses were raised there. Tie was one of the first owners to recognise the ability of the afterwards noted horseman and trainer A. Cringle, who won races for him with Stirling Lad. Many good horses passed through Mr McGregor's’ hands or were bred at his stud whose names do not readily occur these dnvs. but such as Stirling Lad, Edith, Starlight, Evelyn, Golden Crest, Annie K., and Duncan McGregor will easily be recognised. Tie bore his weight of years in a remarkable manner a.nd people not well acquainted with him could not. easily be marie to real;<e that he had long passed the sixty mark by over twenty-live years. The deceased was of a retiring disposition, but loved to note the progress made in recent times by the trotting sport and it was his great delight to visit the big tracks at Eorbury Park and Addington occasionally and have someh.mv point ont to him the men and horses of the hour, a very pleasant- service which was eagerly accented hy many owners, trainers and several pressmen.

The fact that Crib ran well at the Ashburton Comity R.CVs mce tins: last week ei.iv bo taken ns an indication that the operation periomiod upon him hist year lor throat trouble has been successful.

The local horse* Brooksdalc and Glensponse, who ran unsuccessfully at the Ashburton County K-C.'s meeting last week, were brought back t.o Invercargill on Saturday night last. Brooksdalc ran well for about- a mile in his essay over hurdles and then d formed out suddenly, while Glensnonse was prominent for about a mile and a’-iuarti-r in the second day batten event, lie jum’s‘d fairly weli and created the im-o.-i-ssiou that ho will do better when more C. Emerson, the well-known jockey, who mis been in England for some time, arrived L.-.ek in Christchurch, via America, on 'ihtirsday afternoon last. It is reported that Silver Peak was showing signs of soreness after racing on the first tiny of the recent meeting of the Ashburton. County ILC. Primum gave some tremble at the starting post in'his races at Ashburton, bat got away fairly well each time. Battle bong has been schooled over hurdles at Wellington R.C. headquarters, sin,i has siiiisfied his owner by the way he has uikeu U> the jumping game. lr. is understood that a conference between the Jockeys’ Association and the racehorse owners will be held in Wellington on June lu, when the horsemen will bo repreteiitetl uy Messrs G. IX Sheath, H. W. Davies and V/. By an. The well-known Southlander, F. Ellis, has covered ins connection with F. IX Janes's Rice anon stable, with which ho has been connected for a few years. Ellis ha.- decided to relinquish riding over ob'itacles and will restrict himself to steering gallopers in future. Should an opportunity offer Ellis may settle down as a trainer, a calling for which he is peculiarly adapted by reason of experience, steadiness and marked intelligence. 'fhe two-year-old Listening Post has been (thrown our. ox training, and will be treated u> a spell prior to embarking on a preparation fur spring racing. The Bcragoon-—Volga colt knocked down at ihe Svdney yearling sales to Mr J. Stewart for 250 guineas, was bought for Mr Ci. M Greenwood, of Christchurch. Tim youngster has been shipped to New Zealand. Owing to the large acceptance of 44 Jor the Telegraph Hack Handicap at the Egmont meeting, the race will be run iu two divisions, the first division being the iusi race, at ILIO a.m. SOUTH CANTERBURY RACES.
