VAGRANT VERSE
BALLADE OF NEW ROMANCE. (Written for the Southland Tones,) The picture hero wins no more — His antic pose is out-of-date. The daily round is but a bore. But not to any potentate; We are the children of a state, We know this now by lucky chance; And we are cheering, stirred, elate: Here comes the Prince of new romance! The Empire holds rare gifts in store. And men beyond the grip of fate; Brave banners wave by score on score. Strange welcomes hang from hall and gate, There is a world to recreate, And there’s a cry of “We advance,” Our little gifts need never wait.— Here comes thePrinceof new romance! The days are blazoned with new lore. The old imperial dream to sate; A thousand books o’er which to pore. And men and things to love or hate} In newer uses the sedate Work-a-day faddists break a lance And lose one duel at anyrate— L’ENVOI: Here comes the Prince of new romance! Sire, when the petty day is o’er The great hour dawns with circumstance As splendid as brave deeds of yore— Here comes the Prince of new romance! —Southerner. Invercargill, May 9.
