BASKET BALL
ATTEMPT AT REVIVAL. Although baiiket ball has been played in a more or less haphazard way in Invercargill for some years, until recently no attempt had been made to organise matches as is done in the northern centres. On Wednesday evening some of those interested in the game met with a view to forming an association on the lines of the Hockey Association which has existed here for many years. It is expected that all schools, both primary and secondary, will enter at least one team in the competitions. Two grades for play will be arranged, a junior for primary school girl? and a senior for secondary school girls and any other team.:- that desire to enter. For the benefit of those who know little of the game it may he well to give some account of it? merits. Perhaps its chief recommendation is that no individual apparatus Is required, hence many children, debarred from playing hockey, are enabled to take pan in team games with very little expense. All the apparatus necessary is an association football and two ;*o?ts with hoops attached. While it provides much less strenuous exercise than hockey, it is said by players to be equally beneficial, affording healthful recreation lor children too small or not sufficiently robust to play hockey. Further, in these days of scarcity of playing areas, the fact that very little space is required—indeed it can be played on asphalt or indoors if desired—makes it a suitable game for schools the space of which is limited. It is thought that it might be of some help to those desirous of taking up the game to see a match played according to the rules decided upon by the association. For this purpose a match has been arranged at the Girls’ High School for next Wednesday at 4 pan. when a Technical College team wnl play a High School team.
