♦ Auckland, Dec. IS. Mr Sheehan stated in the Provincial Council that the i Superintendent had been offered a steamer to ply to Poverty Bay for a subsidy of £1,000. The case againsb Dr Cougty, of the ship Chile, is proceeding. The evidence of Mrs Yessy is most sensational. It discloses barbarous conduct on the part of the doctor. He had a woman tied from morning till night to the capstan on the hottest day experienced during the voyage. "Wellington, Dec. 18. A subscription is being raised for the purpose of presenting a piece of plate to the late Mayor for his past services. The Native feud is not yet settled. Major Willis has not been more successful with the Muaupokos than he had previously been with the Ngatiraukawas. Puke and his followers are guarding the Horowhenua stream, and refuse to allow any Muaupokos to cross. They have turned back several. Otaki is full of Ngatiraukawas, ready for any emergency.
