MELBOURNE.
The Argus of the 13th mat. reports : — In the import market a good enquiry has been experienced for merchandise generally, and moderate, sales hare been reported. Breadstuffs
do not command any special notice. Flour is moving off in bakers' lots at £13 5s to £13 7§ 6d ; for parcels there is a fair inquiry at £12 12s 6d to £12 15s, though we are without any actual transactions to refer to. Wheat is -wanted, and quotations are firm at 5s 4d to 5s 8d ; but in the absence of anything like supplies, no transactions can be recorded. Oats are in good request. A Kne of 1200 bushels has changed hands at 4s 5d for common feeding ; and were supplies more abundant, a much larger business could be done. Maize maintains a very steady quotation at 4s lOd. The recent advance in Patna rice h»s directed attention towards Bankok long rice, as the nearest substitute that can be provided ; and we learn that a line of 300 tons dressed has been taken up on private terms, the price for trade parcels being at same time sent up to £21 to £22. Dundee goods are still being looked after. We hear of 80 bales cornsacks having changed hands at very full rates. We note a good inquiry for sugars, but as holders are making a stand for higher rates, operations are not on so large a scale. We learn of the quittance of a few hundred bags Mauritius at up to 35s 6J. A parcel of 300 cases Devoe's kerosene oil has been placed at Is Bid. Teas are moving off in very fair lines for trade purposes. 1000 halfchests low medium congous have been placed at Is 4d. The sales of timber embrace 2216 red deals, 11 x 3, ex Thomas Stephens and Tweed, CXB brand, disposed of at 6d per foot 9x3; while 9x3 sold at sid to sjd. The Syren's cargo of white pine was al3O disposed of, when hewn logs realised 10d per 100 ft. lineal, sawn flitches 11s 6d, and T. am^G. flooring 8s 9d, while boards and scantling brought 8s 6d to 8s 9d ; 3x2 brought 9s 6d, 12 x 1, 13 xl, 14 x 1, and 17 x 1, planed one side, sold at 16s 9d. In HquiJs, equal to about 50 hhds, in hhdß and quarters, of Hennessy'a pale brandy have changed hands at 9s 3d. Messrs J. H. Clough and Co. held their wool sale yesterday, and catalogued upwards of 700 bales. There was a good attendance of buyers, and the competition for most of the lots offered was spirited, although prices were not qoite up to last week's rates, in consequence of the late London telegrams received here. Greasy sold for 8d to 13d : scoured, 18id to 2s OJd ; and fleece, 13d to 22 jd per lb.
