IMMIGRATION TO SOUTHLAND.
The following letter from Mr Yogel, in reply to a communication from Sir F. Dillon Bell, urging the requirements of Southland in the mitter of immigration, has been forwarded to us for publication : — General Government Offices, Christchurch, Nov. 20, 1873. The Hon. Sir F. Dillon Bull, M.U.R. Sir, — I have the honor to acknowledge tha receipt of your letter of the Bth insfc., in which you call my attention "to the urgent demand t lint exists in Southland for a considerable number of immigrants." Tn r^ply, I have to state that T am not only very sensible af the demand, but that I have been doing mv utmost to meet it ; as I have no doubt you will bo informed by those gentlemen who have lately been constituted a Committee to promote immigration to the Southland district. I h*ve telegraphed to the Agent- General, instructing him to aend immigra its direct to the Bluff ; and I have a!su instructs 1 the department in Wellington to send immigrants from Dunedia to the Bluff. You are quite correct in supposing that such is the demand for labor in the other parts of Otago, that there is difficulty in| complying with the instructions last stated. As an example, I may state tint, although Mr Allan wa.-< directed to send to the Bluffa considerable number of the immigrants brought by the " L*dy Joclyn." he could not, prosurij more than thirty-aix adults fop the purpose. lam writing by this m nl to the Agent-General , instructing him to arrange for ships calli'g at the Bluff with immigrants, at intervals of about six. weeks. — 1 have the honor to be, Sir, Your obedient servant, Julius Yogel.
