RAILWAY TRAFFIC RETURNS.

The following are the Southland Eailway Beturns for the month ending May 31 : — Corresponding Passengers. No. Cash received. Month in 1872.

G. F. Martin and Co. report : — We are glad to be able to note a marked improvement in the demand for stock and properties during the past month, and especially in store cattle, a considerable number having passed through our hands, particulars of which we give in the following quotations. Fat Cattle. — We have no transactions to re port, but are aware of several lots having changed hands at from £3 10s to £5 15s for spayed cows and bullocks. Fat Sheep. — The demand is increasing, and prices showing a fair advance Our sales comprise 1000 halfbreds at 10s, which may be taken as a fair quotation. Store Sheep. — The market for this class of Bto k is about closed for the season, the station flocks being mostly drafted off for the winter. At our sale at Mr M'Clymont's, Jacob's Biver, good prices were obtained. Half and threequarter bred ewes, in lamb to Leicester rams, brought 13s 3d ; halfbred lambs, mixed sexes, .lbs ; merino ewes, fullmouthed and broken, 4s 9d. Store cattle are in good demand, and wellgrown mobs show a considerable improvement in price. Our sales comprise 200 head, with fair proportion of bullocks, at £2 2s - SCO head, mostly young cattle, 355 ; 50 head steers and spayed cows, £3 Is 6d ; 40 bullocks, 3 to 6 yrs old, £3 15s. A large number of steers and spayed cows could he placed at the above quotations. On Wednesday, the 4th inßt., we submitted the Glenure station, containing 9000 acres leasehold and 280 freehold, together with about 6600 sheep, working bullocks, and station horses, and after some spirited bidding, it was knocked down to Messrs Wentworth and Cowan for £5,400. Wool. — We held a sale of odd lots on Saturday last, with the following result :— Merino fleece, 9|d ; locks, 3£d to 4Jd ; dried station skins, 4}d per lb. Invercargill, June 9, 1873.
