The result of the Invercargill election confirms the accuracy of the statement made by us a few days ago, that Mr Cuthbertson's supporters were then confident of securing his return by a decided majority. This conclusion had been arrived at after a careful examination of the roll, and it is a proof of the business-like manner in which the matter had been conducted, that while the number of Mr Cuthbertson's supporters who would j record their vote, had been estimated at 160, the number who actually polled is now given at 159, and it is expected th it this amount will be increased by two or three when the official return is announced. Eodgers made quite a pyrotechnic display in the Government reserve, in honor of the result of the day's election. In accordance with a suggestion that the public gardens would afford more scope, being removed from the proximity of buildings, the " venue" was ultimately changed to that locality, and the display was witnessed by a considerable number of spectators on Tay street. It would seem that no definite arrangement has been arrived at as to the observance of the Queen's birthday, which this year falls on Saturday, but there is no doubt that jMonday will be generally observed by the public as a holiday. The friends and supporters of Mr J. R. Cuthbertson yesterday evening invited that gentleman to a supper in the Southland Club hotel, in celebration of the result of the election. The refreshments were supplied in the most recherche style by Mr Hume. Mr Tapper occupied the chair, and Mr J. W. Mitchell the vice-chair. The usual loyaland patriotic toasts having been given, the toast of the evening, the health of the successful candidate, was ably proposed by Mr Wade, and received witli the utmost enthusiasm. Mr Cuthbertson, in replying, congratulated his committee on the success which had attended their efforts that day ;n the cause of progress. After a succession of appropriate toasts the company broke up about midnight. Smith, of Long Busr-, has forwarded for our inspection an excellent sample, well matured in every respect. In the case of three young men who were charged with a serious offence, the jury " deliberated " for the time stated, and then had to be discharged. "It was intimated (says the Advertiser ) that eleven had agreed, but the twelfth man took a determined stand against the opinions of his colleagues." "With respect to the Canterbury portion of t lie | sulmon ova, the Lyttolton Times reports : — '' It is to be regretted that the salmon ova are notturning out so well a 9 expected. A large proportion of those which should have hatched out during tho present week h ive gone bad, and been removed from the boxes. Many of the ova not so far advanced towards hatching out have also had to be removed, and altogether the quantity in the boxes ia now more than half less than it originally was. Although it is very problematical whether any fish will be brought to life, the curator has not, however, lost all hope, and so far as caro or ability is concerned, the public ra:iy rest assured the ova could not be in bstter hands. It would appear that a number of rats smelt out i the ova on Monday night, and got on to the j hatching boxes in search of them, but these being securely covered in they only obtained a number of dead ova for their trouble."
