APARIMA ROAD BOARD.
The Board met in the house of Mr W. A. Lyon, Islabank, on the 12th inst., Mr James Mackintosh, in the chair. The correspondence included a letter from the Provincial Under-Secretary, stating that no mistake was made in the proclamation of 20th February last, anent certain roads in Aparima Eoad District. The Board resolved to protest against the action taken by the Government in this matter, and instructed the clerk to state that an error has occurred, inasmuch as the proclamation sets forth that roads therein specified, are proclaimed main district roads at the instance of the Aparima Soad Board, which is not the fact, inasmuch as the two roads first specified in the proclamation, viz., the road from Invercargill to Eiverton, and thence to Otautau, is the main thoroughfare of the Western District. The Superintendent was requested to rescind the proclamation of 20th February, as far as these two roads are concerned, and to declare the same to be main Government roads. The accounts for gravelling, &c, done on the road from Eiverton to Limestone Plains, amounting to £70 4s were passed for payment. The liabilities of the late Waimatuku Eoad Board, for gravelling on the road from Eiverton to Limestone Plains, and other works, amounting to £78 198 3d, were passed for payment. Theßoard resolved that Mr M'Clymont's claim for compensation for diversion road through section 21, block 9, Jacob's Kiver Hundred, should be paid as soon as the exact amount is ascertained from Mr Baker. An application from Mr M'Clymont for right to erect swing gates on certain i roads was granted, on the condition that ■ the roadway in the vicinity of the gates is j kept in good repair. A memorandum from Messrs Robertson, M'Clymont and Officer, tendering to the Board the sum of £19, with the r* quest that it should be expended in gravelling the road running through Mr Saundera'a property, was read, when the Board resolved to accept of this donation on the terms proposed. I Mr W. Calder's tender for gravelling road leading through Mr W. SaundersV at £3 7s per chain, was accepted. Mr John Ford's tender for ditches and formation at £1 7s per chain, and for other works on New River flat road, and on . road from Waianiwa to Spar Bush, was accepted. Messrs Fraser and Gilkison's tender for works on road south from Waianiwa Bush, viz., bridge £33, and ditching and formation £1 5s per chain, was accepted. Mr David Lyon's tender for five box drains on road from Turnbull and Deacon's to Limestone Plains, £22, was accepted. The Board resolved that in future there should be three copies of the specifications — one to be open for inspection at Invercargill, one at Eiverton, and one with the chairman of the committee of the subdivision. The committee for Jacob's Biver Subdivision was authorised to call for and accept tenders for the works already sanctioned by the Board. Mr John Cumming was appointed chairman of committee. The committees for the other sub divisions were authorised to call for and accept tenders for the works for which the Engineer has prepared specifications Mr James Mackintosh was appointed chairman of committee for Mount Pleasant subdivision ; Mr Peter M'^Neill was appointed chairman of committee lor the Waimatuku subdivision, and Mr Thomas Sutton was appointed chairman of committee for New Eiver subdivision. Mr Samuel Hurved was engaged to keep the road leading from Main Road at Mr George HowelTs, and extending north, in repair for two months for £4. Messrs K. D. MacLachlan and M. Devaney, who were disqualified as members of the Board by non-attendance, were re-eltcted. The following accounts were passed for payment :— Valuer, £34 19s; solicitor, £1 Is; Fergusson and Mitchell, stationery, £11 14s ; stamp, <fee, £5 3a 4d. The Board resolved to instruct thy Engineer to lay off a road from Yellow Bluff to Winton and Wrey's Bush road. The Board resolved to request the Superintendent to declare the following roads main district roads, that is to say — (1.) Th« road leading from ( tautau township, and extending in a north-
westerly direction to section 17, block 2, Aparima Hundred, thence N.E. parallel to Jacob's River, to northern boundary of district. (2.) The road known as Waiau Eoad, beginning at If.E. angle of section 9, block 2, Aparima Hundred, and extending westerly to the boundary of the district. (3.) The road known as Waicola Road, starting at east ancle of Bection 22, block 2, Aparima Hundred, and running north to northern boundary of district. The Board resolved that the vote for compensation for diversion of road from Upper Ford through Mr Campbell's ground be increased to £25, which is the lowest amount Mr Campbell will accept for same, and that the Treasurer be instructed to pay Mr Campbell as soon as conveyance of portiom marked off for road line is completed. The Board resolved to determine at next meeting which is the most suitable place for the office of the Board, and the clerk was instructed to give notice to each of the members that the Board will take this matter into consideration at next meeting. The Board will meet again on Saturday, 24th May, at Mr Lyon's bouse.
