MELBOURNE.

The TelegTaph of the 13th inst. reports : — Breadstuff's are firmer ; the supplies offering are email, owing to the fact that farmers are, as a rule, storing their wheat, instead of placing it on the market. It would seem not improbable that a few will make a good market by selling at the fair prices now ruling, but the majority, who are keeping their grain back, will eventually have to face a. hear? loss. At auction, to-day, Messrs M'Caw and Co. had little whrat to offer ; • medium sample sold for 5s Oid, but outside the rooms 5s 2d has been given for clean lots. Flour remains without much change. Evans's Wangaratta sold at auction at £11 10s, which must be considered as a full value for prime country lots. Town brands are selling from £11 10s to £11 15s. Feeding grains do not show much change. New oats Bold publicly to day at 3s l£d, whilst trade lots are quitted up to 3s 3d. Maize ie firm at 3s 3d. Cape barley was purchased at 2s 10|i. Cormackß are quiet, and less money is being accepted. Candles remain firm at 1 1 f d for De Boubaix's and Gouda's duty paid. Kerosene, in consequence of the heavy fall in value yesterday , is dull, and sales are not reported of any quantities. In hops a good enquiry exists, and a line of Kentish, 1872, found a buyer to-day at late rates. Malt is firm at 12s 3d. Sugars have a decidedly upward tendency, though the trade do not at present seem quite prepared to advance at once to holders' ideas of values. Messrs Greig and Murray offered today the entire cargo of the Leading Star, from Mauritius, but only succeeded in selling three lines, the balance being withdrawn for higher rates. Low browns realised £29 5s per ton ; low yellows, £31 5s ; medium ' connters, £83 6a-; the balance of this cargo has been sent into store pending the acceptation by the trade of the prices demanded. Privately, ex lferid<an, Kg. note sales o whites up to £40 10s ; anddf greyillnirjitarsat £36 10s. In teas, the demand is 'fair. Building materials are in good demand ; - both cement and plaster show an advance in rates. In ccrols -we note the sales of ' the cargoes of the Orwell and Aborigine, the xiormer consisting of 266 tons of Lambton, which .realised 25s per ton, delivery alongside vessel, net cash; i the latter consisting of 180 tons of Newcastle, at 27s per ton, same terms. Liquids are in fair demand. There is a demand for the recent arrivals of the new brew of English ale, 'and almost the entire quantity to hand has been taken up.
