THE LUNA.
The Colonial Government's p.s. Luna, Comm&nder Fairehild, left Port Chalmers at 5 p.m. on the 30th ult., with Dr Hector, Capt. Edwin, and other gentlemen, for the purpose of examinng certain coal deposits at Waikawa and Preservation lalet. Dr Hector was landed at Toi Tois, aad the Luna proceeded on to the Bluff, stopping to surrey the coast off Waipapapa Point. The a.s. Aldinga, aome years ago, struck there on a rock, supposed to be about three miles off the land, and other vessels hare alao reported dangerous rocks off the Point. Night coming on, time did not permit the Luna to survey within two miles of the shore, but even at that distance from the land, the bottom was found to be very uneven, the lead at aome casts giving twenty fathoma, and at the next only three. Vessels should therefore give Waipapapa a wide berth. Capt. Fairehild reports the barque Southern Cross off Waikawa, bound to the eastward.
