Aucelanb, Jan. 1. The races at Ellerslie were a great success. The weather was fine, and 9000 spectators were present. Maiden Plate. £100.— Mr Walter's Ben Nevis, 1 ; Eanger, 2 ; and Manna, 3. Volunteer Cavalry Plate, £50. — Ben Nevis, 1 ; Parramatta, 2. Ellerslie Handicap Sweep of 10 soys., with 150 soys. added, distance two miles. — Six horses started. Mr Atkinson's Black Eagle, 1 ; Maori Weed, 2. Railway Stake?, £50. —Mr WaUers's Slander, 1 ; Nero, 2. The excursions by water were largely attended. The criminal calendar of the Supreme Court contains 22 cases. Jan. 2. The streets are crowded with pleasureseekers. Charini's circus horses have been landed, in the presence of a gre;it concourse. The Customs authorities refused to allow the horses to be landed until they had been examined by a veterinary surgeon. They number twenty-five fine animals. At the Ellerslie races to-day there were 5000 persons present. Maiden Produce Stakes, 50 soys. — Mr Walmsley's Atlanta, 1. Auckland Metropolitan Handicap, of 100 soys., one mile and a half. — Mr Walters's Slander, 1 ; Black Eaglo, 2. Ladies' Purse, 50 soys. — Mr Walters's Slander, 1 ; Mr Snell's Nero, 2. The debtors in Mount Eden gaol have addressed a petition to the Superintendent, showing that by clause 31 of the Bankruptcy Act the detaining creditor must pay a weekly sum of 12s for each debtor's support. The creditors complain that such money ia paid to the Provincial Government, while the debtors receive prison rations at 4a per week. The petitioners pray that His Honor will be pleased to direct that such mainte nance-money be handed over to the debtors, to enable them to obtain food of such quality as they have been hitherto accustomed to. Napier, Jan. 2. The Hawke's Bay Times has suspended publication. Wellington, Jan. 2. At a large meeting of working men, held in support of the eight hours' system, it was resolved to form an association to maintain the syslora, and a committee was appointed to canvass for subscriptions to support Messrs Brogden's men now on strike against more than eight hours' work. Lyttelton, Jan. 2. The regatta yesterday was a great success. 3000 visitors from Christchurch were present. The Church Bazaar realised £200. Dunedin, Jan. 2. The G-oxernor attended the Caledonian gathering yesterday. The weather was splendid, and there was a large attendance. The Customs Eevenue for the year shows an increase of £30,629 over IS7I. At Messrs Driver, Stewart and Co'a wool sale on Tuesday there was an active competition for the better sorts. For greasy merino and cross-bred full prices were obtained. The lower qualities were less soughtfor. Choice and medium washed sorts were in fair demand. The highest price realised at the sale was 2k Oydi Arrived.— Georgina, from ifSochoofoo.
