MASTER HUMPHREY" AND THE SOUTHLAND NEWS.

Bib, —A perseTering ecribbler in the Otago T>»ily Times, signing himself "Master Humphrey," has been wasting a great quantity of paper and ink in puerile attempts to prove that progress is a wrong thing. His reasoning regarding railways, for example, really amounts to this: that because some railways already existing and working in Otago and elsewhere in this Colony haTe pro Ted themselves in every way valuable institutions, all future railways constructed in similar circumstances must proTo • failure. This writer in a recent issue of the Timie, in a fit of jaundice, indulged in some personalities, »nd in the following day's issue of the paper at* his words in the mos 1- complete and abject manner. His scurrility was immediately and naturally reproduced in the local column of the Southland News, and his apology carefully excluded therefrom. Not content, however, with copying nastiness which evrn the author thereof himself condemned, and after he had condemned it, the News in Saturday's issue managed to furnish its column* with origin*! matter which looks very like " Master Humphrey's" self condemned letter in a re arranged form. Mr Macandrew is the most thoroughly representative roan in the ProTince, and it is plainly an ineult to the electors of Otago to «ay that they for the third time (mice in succession) put the wrong man in the right place. " Colonist" CTidently forgets that Mr Macandrew was elected to the superintendency by a majority of the electors of the t whole province, and that therefore the clique which placed Mr Reid in power misrepresented the electors. The public may have noticed that when the News is inclined 'affectionately towards a party, it is apt to show its affection for A by abuting B. Its abuse of Mr Macandrew and his may therefore be regarded as a new phase of its iore tor Ifr Donald Eeid. —Tours, Sec., An Eitctob 09 Otago.
