During a quarrel about a beehive at Murramburrah, a farmer named Percival struck his opponent, D.-lohry, deid with an axe. The captain and mate of the Carl have had their seite'iee commuted to imprisonment for life, the first three years in irons. William M'Crow, a lodger with a butcher named John Ward, of Wooloomooloo, cut Mrs W.trd's throat and then cut his own. Mrs Ward has since died, and M'Crow lies in a prec rious state. The result of 18 diys' work at the Monk land reef, Gympie, was a cake of gold weighing 5800 ozs. The Tambaroora mines are yielding as richly as ever. The Grace Darling has arrived afc Newcastle from Lyttelton. The Government proposal to disband the infantry force has been warmly discussed in the Assembly. The markets are dull. Tea is easier. Stocks are increasing. Advices from Mauritius to the 17th October report that the Ayre, Sarah, Dreyfus, Emile, and Queen of the South were loading for New Zealand. Melbourne. Yiscount Canterbury has not yet received any official notification of his removal. The Upper and Lower Houses of Parliament are at a deadlock relative to certain amendments made by the former on the Education Bill. A conference on the subject failed to bring about a satisfactory result. Quack won the Bendigo Cup. Minnie, the female acrobat, fell from the flying trapeze in the Bendigo Theatre, and was nearly killed. Commercial. — Sales of wheat have been made at 7s 2d for best Adelaide. 200 tons of malt have changed hands at from 4s to ss. The cargo of sugars ex Nightingale, realised from £39 to £39 10s for besfc white, and from £35 to £35 15s for counters. A telegram from Mauritius, via Aden, dated 15th November, reports that sugars had advanced — whites, 10 cents, and finest yellow grainy, 20 cents. The following additional intelligence was received by the Alhambra : — Melbourne, Dec. 7. The R M S.S. Behar, with the Australian mails for transmission to India and the East, left Hobson's Bay on the 6th, for Galle via King George's Sound The Behar cleared out with 107,703 jzs. of gold, £23,050 in specie, and some general cargo, besides two racehorse3, Sir Hercules and Phantom, which were shipped for India. The Melbourne Woollen Mill, at Yarraville, Footscray, is to be formally opened on the 14th. * There were issued at the M ; nt during the week ending 6th inst. 9030 sovereigns, making the tofc.il number issued up to that date 701,000. Sir Francis Murphy, Mr "Winter, and Mr O'Brien have been nominated for the Eastern province. The polling-day is the 17th inst. It is now formally announced that arrangements have been made to run a line of first-class steamers every 75 days from Batavia to Adelaide, Melbourne, Syduey, and Brisbane, and baek, in connection with the Netherlands-India and other British lines. The service is to commence early next year. The deadlock between the two Houses still continues. This will delay the prorogation. A Bill has been brought in to increase the Judges' salaries LSOO each. It will be opposed. Mr Fellows accepts the judgeship with the increase. In the Carl case Mount and Morris have been committed for trial. Early Morn won the Ballarat Cup, and the Ace won the Handicap. Adelaide. At the Parliamentary banq.iet given on the 3rd in honor of Sir James Fergusson, His Excellency, in responding to the toast of his health, expressed his gratification at the cordiality which had existed between himself and the Legislature, and said he would at all times take an interest in the progress and welfare of the colony. The Police Commission's report recommends the retention of Commissioner Hamilton, but that there should be less interference with state affairs ; the transference of Inspector Bee, because he has not the confidence of the man ; and the removal of Sergeant Efcheredge and others for disorderly conduct At the fjirewell ba lquet given to the Governor on the occis'on of his departure from the colony, neirly2oo persons were present. Tiie Chief Justice, Sir R. Hanson, presided, and proposed the health of Sir Janei Fergusson. His Excellency replied in one of the best speeches of the kind delivered here. He described with freedom his impressions of the colony, and the working of constitutional government here. It is reported that the Governor declines to receive a testimonial, as others besides friends have c mtributdd. Mr Todd contradicts Mr Mann's statement about the unsatisfactory condition of the overlaud telegraph ; but at the same ti:ne admits that the white ants are troublesome in the tropics, though not so destructive as represented. He had anticipated the necessity oi' replacing some of the timber by iron poles, and intends using better insulators so as to reduce the ri^k of interruptions. Thirty one nominations have bsen received for ihe Adelaide Cup, inclusive of Quick and eight Melbourne horses. 38,0'J0 acres of. land were selected during the month of October, averaging £2 an acre. The Government iatend introducing a ! bill immediately making the Upper Honse elective. The Sydney insurance offices lose considerably by the loss of the ship Royal Adelaide. The Pacific Insurance Company bas called up another £ I per share. A seaman named Fallon has been remauded in connection with the Carl murders. A large meeting of members of the Assembly was held at Mr Parkes's offiee on the 6th, to consider the rejection of the Newspaper Postage Bill by the Legislative Council, and a unanimous feeling was expressed against the constitutional right of the Upper House to interfere in a question of taxation. The members of the Assembly who opposed the bill on principle hold tbe same view. Palmerston. An attempt was made on the 4th by tho Woolner blacks to spear the Government resident while he was visiting tho native camp. He had a narrow escape, as a spear grazed his shoulder. The police and volunteers pursued the Woolner blacks, but unsuccessfully. It is reported that a rich copper discovery has been made near Katherine.
