RAILWAY SCHEMES.
(to the edito* of thb times.) Sib,-— I question whether even the faintest echo of tbe great strife at present agitating the central districts of Otago has reached any of your readers, and yet the issnee involved hare an important beanag on the future prosperity of Invercargill. I refer to the battle of the lineB — one party proposing as th« first step to a central railway to connect Tokomairiro and Tuapeka ; the other, more numerous and influential, if less noisy, advocating the leas circuitous route by the Mataura and valley of the Molyneux. As to the merits of the two schemes, I may just remark that the Tuapeka line is generally regarded as simply a dodge to stave off the formation of any central railway at all, in order that the business people of Lawrence may enjoy a monopoly of the up-country trade j while the rival scheme, i from the richness of the districts it traverses, and i facilities for construction, recommends itself to every impartial observer. It is not however on the relative merits I wish to dilate, but rather briefly to point out the advantages Invercargill must reap from the construction of the line via Mataura. Tour city will then be the nearest seaport to all the principal goldfields, and will, to a certainty, become the centre from which all supplies shall be procured. As the average annual gold yield of those districts is about a quarter of a million sterling, the value of the trade is easily estimated. I trust these few remarks may attract public attention to the question, and lead to such pressure being applied to the Government as will induce them to make an immediate start with what IB known aa the Grand Control Trunk Railway. — I am, &c., Cbsmis w Feb. Mount Benger, 2? orember- 15, 1872.
