MELBOURNE. The Argus of the 14th inst. reports : — In the import markets a fair amount of business has been transacted. Breadstuff's do not ■how much actirity, and no large sales are reported. Flour in trade parcels meets with purchasers at £19 to £19 10s, sales being made at our quotations. Wheat was sold at auction this forenoon, and realised. 7s lOd for Northern 5 pmately, 8s -was obtained for Albury wheat. Quotations range from 7s to Bs, but some importers prefer storing to accepting present rates. We understand that the cargo of the African Maid just arrived from South Australia i9 thus going into store. Oats meet with a good inquiry ; sales privately are effected at 3s 3d to 3a 3£d. Under the hammer, about 700 bags were cleared off at 3s 2id to 3s 3£d. Maize is very quiet ; we learn of sales publicly at 3s o£d. We quote for trade parcels 3a Id to 3s 2d. We note a very much, improved inquiry for cornsacks, and about 200 bales have been got rid of Bince yesterday, at 15s 3d to 15s 6d. To-day the latter figure has be^i readily paid even for quantities. Sugars are very steady ; buyers, however, have not been operating so freely. The cargo of Java sugar per Mary King, about 3900 mats, will be offered for sale to-morrow ; likewise a few hundred bags Mauritius. The Oriental, from Port Louis, is reported amongst the arrivals, but not having reached the bay tiU late, fall particulars of her adxioes could with difficulty be got. We learn, however, that she brings dates to 9th October. The market at Mauritius was very firm. The Flora was loading for Melbourne. Teas are inactive. The cargo of congous per Hannah Nicholson will also be amongst the offerings tomorrow. Speculative attention has been directed towards tobacco, leading to the quittance to one buyer of about 1800 boxes Cameron's Two Seas and "Venus tens on private terms. There is a good demand for oilmen's stores. In liquids, we learn of the disposal of a parcel of^OO quartercaslcs Otard's hrandy at a full price. For small lots of this brand we continue to quote 5s 9d to 5s lOJd. The wool sales held to-day at Messrs E. Goldsbrough and Co.'s were well attended, and 2,732 bales were sold, greasy realising lOd to Is 3|d — the latter price for a very superior clip of 169 bales ; fleece, Is 7d to 2s 2fd ; lambs', at Is 9id to 2s 3d ; scoured, Is 9£d to 2s 6Jd ; and handwashed and slipe, ll^i to 1b s£d per lb. There was » somewhat easier feelirig, and prices must be quoted a shade lower.
