The A*gus of the 24th ult. reports :— In the import markets to-day a moderate amount of business has been transacted, a dirposition to operate to a fair extent having been evince 1. Much satisfaction is exhibited at the successful opening of telegraphic communication witb England. It is, however, impossible as vet to arrive'at any just conclusion as to the effect which such daily communication is hkely to have on onr markets. Messrs Jameß Henty and Co , of this city, have kindly placed at our disposal a nrivate telegram from thei* correspondent in Hone Kong, dated 22nd October, whioh states tho* rf,o LFVro-chow tea market was in the same state as when the mail left. Export of tea to the colonies to date amounted to 8,400,0001h8, against 9,380,8291bs to the same period the year before. The barque Batavia was loaded for Melbourne. In breadstuffs, flour still continues to attract attention. We learn of the quittance of 50 tons in a line, besides other parcels, at £16 5s ; we are also informed ot £16 10s having been offered and refused for large lines. For trade requirements a good demand has been experienced, and sales are reported of such lots at £16 15s to £17. Wheat is also very saleable at extreme figures ; 1,500 bushels good Victorian were placed at 7s 6d. A parcel of 3,000 bushels Tasmanian changed hands at a full price, the sample being very prime. At auction a parcel of New Zealand was quitted at 7s 2d. The quotation of 55s for Adelaide wheat, in London, given in our English telegram this morning, is generaUy oupposed to be an error, and that the figure should be 659. Oats are very firm. Ordinary qaalities, to the extent of a few thousand bushels, were quitted by auction at 3s 2*Jd to 3s 3id. Good feed commands 3s 4£d, and fine milling are wanted at 3s 7d. Maize was sold publicly at 3s 2d. We also hear of a line of 1,300 bags having been sold privately at about the same figure. A considerable business has been doing for some time past in malt to arrive and on the spot at lis. Sugars are in fair request. We understand that the cargo of the Elizabeth, about 4,300 bags Mauritius, will be submitted to competition to-morrow forenoon. Sales of candles, in bond, are reported at 9sd for De Roubaix. Currants are likewise much run after, and 5d is freely offering for parcels, but in the face of a sale at auction at s|-d, holders are very stiff. Purchases of leaf tobacco for export have been effected this afternoon. Kerosene oil is improving in value, attempts being made to get the price up ; ls lid is now asked. Sales of Hennessy's pale brandy (1871) are reported at 6s 6d, The usual weekly wool sale was held at Messrs R. Goldsbrough and Co.'s warehouses to-day. Last week's rates were fully maintained, greasy realising 10J1 to ls 3*d ; extra greasy cross-bred, ls 4jd ; washed fleece, ls 9d to 2s 3*d ; lambs , ls lid to 2s 5d ; and scoured, ls B|d to 2* 3d per lb. Some large clips were bought in, buyers being unwilling to pay a further advance. In all, 911 bales were sold.
