Mr Graham, director of the recentlyestablished National Bank of New Zealand, has sailed from London in ordt r to establish a branch in that colony, Mr Adam Burnes, the manager, follows with the staff. Mr Waterson has been appointed manager in Australia. Mr Badcock has been appointed secretary to the Bank of Australasia in London. The withdrawals of gold have depressed the stock markets. Wool. — After a gradual advance of from 2d to 3d per lb, a sudden reaction took place on the 23rd September, through the introduction of old etoek, and towards the close tbe advance was lost, but afterwards partially recovered. Half the wool- offered was taken by. continental buyers, and 5000 bales were withdrawn. Tallow. — The Australian tallow market is quiet, and stocks are large. Mutton, 44s to 45s ; beef, 435. At the petroleum wells pumping is P>< -still suspended. Sydney oil, £32 to >£35 ; sperm, £86. Copper. — The copper market is depressed, with but few transactions. Present quotations, £88 to £90. Tin, £141, and receding. Corn declining. Adelaide wheat, 555. Hemp has advanced to £20 to £30. Mimosa bark steady. Cotton recovering. Leather slightly easier. Hides j scarce ; best 7d. Arrivals. — Warwick, Mindoaa, Florence Wilson, Commodore. Sailing. — Atrato, s.s. The Australasian Steam Company have bought the steamer Syracuse. Londojt, Oct. 22, 1.32 p.m. The new commercial treaty between England and France will abolish the French differential dues on British shipping, and annul the obligation on the part of England to tax wine according to strength Y7 Other and important changes i are also provided;, with the view ot leaving j the commerce between the two countries untrammelled. j
Oct. 22, 5 pm, The Government are sending out Sir Bartle Frere, formerly Governor of Bombay, to Zanzibar, to make arrange- | ments for the annihilation of the slave ' trade, and to open up communication with Dr Livingstone, who ia now exploring Lake Victoria. ~ The Cesarewitch Stakes at Newmarket were won by Salvanos, Sylva second, Enfield third. The Middle" Park Plate resulted in a dead heat between Kaiser and Surinam, and the stakes were divided ; Montsrgis was third.
