The Bishop of Salisbury in the course of his remarks advocated a comprehensive indulgence towards church differences, and demonstrated the impolicy of ecclesiastical litigation: At the distribution of prizes at Salisbury, the Bishop of Manchester said he considered the Oxford local examinations the best movement which had been instituted lor the encouragement of education, inasmuch as 3,500 candidates had been examined. An important conference of Nonconformists at Birmingham favored disestablishment of the Church of England. Sir John Wauchope, Stirling Maxwell, Alex. Grant Ramsay, of Kidaston, and Dr Tulloch, have been gazetted as an Education Board for Scotland. Sir Charles Dilke's speech at Glasgow denounced clas9 legislation. Lord Hatherley, Lord Chancellor, has resigned, and has been succeeded by Sir Roundell Palmer, who has been created * Baron Selbourne. Mr Justice Wiiies has committed suicide. The act has been attributed to an attack of gout on the brain. Sir Seymour Fitzgerald contests Horsham in the Conservative interest. Mr Robert Cunliffe has been elected for the Flint Boroughs. The outbreak of rinderpest in Lincolnshire has been contradicted. The foot-and-mouth disease is rapidly spreading in Yorkshire and Warwickshire. Tbe Scotsman states that the Scotch harvest this year will be the most disastrous known since 1816. Th© bakers' strike has collapsed. Pour' thousand Liverpool dock laborers haye struck. Five thousand colliers at the Staffordshire works, in o^der to avert & lock-out, resolved to submit their demands to arbitration. Great slacking orders bave been given in the iron and coal districts. The ironmasters at Cardiff resolved not to meet the demands of the men, and by a combination close their works within four weeks. The colliery proprietors at Oldham have advanced the price of coals ss. The Darley Wain colliery at Barasley is on fire and closed. A special Cabinet meeting has been beld to discuss the Anglo-TFrench Commercial Treaty, and it is likely to be signed forthwith. The American Council at Zanzibar has received a letter from Dr. Livingstone, dated Unanyembe, July 2nd, extolling Mr Stanley for the energy and kindness •displayed by him. A Democratic governor has been reelected in Georgia, and tbe Republicans have carried the elections in Pennsyl- j vania, Ohio, Nebraska, and Indiana. Grant's re election to the Presidency is now secured. The evacuation of the Marne has commenced. M. 1 hiers ordered Prince Napoleon to quit France, and upon the Prince refusing he was conducted by the police to the Swiss frontier. Extensive emigration has taken place of the inhabitants of Aleace and Lorraine on the expiration of the option of adopting tbe German nationality.
