"Wellington, Oct. 18. The Legislative Council's amendments on the Highway Boards Empowering Bill have been agreed to by the House on a division by 39 to 16. The House has not agreed to the Council's amend ments on the Maori Representation Bill, and a conference of both chambers has been appointed on the subject. The Hawke's Bay Native Lands Amendment Bill and several other private measures have been passed. The Miners Franchise Extension Bill has been thrown out by 24* to 22. The Northern Otago Public Works Bill has been carriei,. £24,000 being allotted for Oamaru, and £30,000 for Moeraki harbor works. The Nelson Boundaries and Eoads Bill has been discharged. Mr Yogel bas intimated that although the Government refused the information on Mr Rollestou's motion the previous day, they intended, before the close ofthe session, to indicate as far as possible what works would be more immediately pushed ; on. They also intended to limit the powers ! conferred by Bection eight of the Railway Bill, by introducing a schedule limiting the amount authorised to be expended ou each line. Mr Kelly's amendment, proposing to distribute the native grant ou the basis of population, was negatived by 33 to 20. A new clause abolishing the special account between the provinces and the colony has been introduced at the suggestion of Mr Fitzherbert. The Legislative Couauil rejected the Deceased Wife's Sister Marriage Bill by 23 to 9. Oct. 21. The Immigration "and Public Works Bill has passed through committee, aud hss been read a third time. On going into Committee of Supply, Mr Wakefield moved, "That the House is desirous of being more definitely informed before the close of the session as to the two appointments in the - Ministry still prospectively vacant out of the eight announced as intended to ba made ; and as to auy intended paid appointments of Natives as a Board of Advice to the Commissioner of Native Reserves ; or to any intended paid appointments of Natives to advise the Government generally as to Native affairs." Mr Yogel said that the Government would afford the information as to the new members of the Cabinet before the session ended. Mr M'Lean said that it was intended to appoint two Natives' to advise the Government, and also a Native Board of Advice to the Native Trustee. He was not prepared to say who the Natives would be. c On a division the motion was negatived by 35 to 17. In Committee of Supply a number of items were passed. Mr Yogel intimated that Mr Woodward would be appointed Public Trustee, his present ofßce not being filled up, and Mr Batkin becoming Secretary to the Treasury. The Oamaru and Maerewhenua Eailway Bill has been thrown out by the Legislative Council.
