Australian news up to 7th September has been received at Hokitika by the Tara-rua : — Melbourne. The s.s. Omeo sailed for Townsville and Port Darwin at the same time as the Tararua, taking 21T> steerage and 40 saloon passengers. Other steamers were also sn'Hn<j; full of passengers for the, new (tilings at C/iartera Towers, near Townsville. The Government proposition to raise a loan of a million and a half, at 4 percent, interest, on the Consolidated stock, has been affirmed by the Legislative Assembly. A motion to place a tax on stock imported from the other Colonies was rejected by the Assembly. Messrs Jatnes Henty and Black have been re-elected to the Legislative Council. The seats for the Eastern and Northwestern Provinces are being contested. A strike has occurred amongst the seamen for an advance of wages. The railway to Seymour was opened with a banquet, at which 500 persons were present.
A fire occurred in Elizabeth street, anrl another in GeeloDg. By the latter, eight wooden houses were devstroyed. r J'he Mi'.rriage with a Deceased "Wife's | Sister Bill is said to be supported by the Government. A collision took place between two trains on the Essenden railway. The guard of one of the trains was slightly injured, but no other hartn was done. Another assault by a prisoner has been committed at Pentridge. Oats are in good request at 3s 3d to 3s 4d. Wheat is dull at 7s. Consider able sales of kerosene have been effected at Is 10d. Late Mauritius advices state that the Architecte Renaud was loading for New Zealand. The rains had greatly retarded the crops. The planters were I making grey sugars almost entirely, and J whites were very scarce.
Sydney. Dr Lang is about to retire from the ministry, after fulfilling clerical duties for fifty years, Kich copper mines are reported to have been discovered in the Bogau district.
