What does a husband's promise about giving up tobacco cud in ? Why, in smoke. A San Francisco paper says :— Mr Todd and party have returned from a second trip to the west coast of Vancouver Island, (British Columbia,) bringing about four Ounces of coarse gold which they mined in the gulches, ravines, creeks, and rivers which abound there. The gold is coarse, and like most Island gold, beautil'ul and bright iv appearance. Some of the pieces weigh §5 each. Others are about the size of a pin head. It was taken principally from crevices. No diggings were discovered in the gravel deposits, which are loose aud unfavorable looking for gold. Game seemed numerous ; an enormous elk, with great branching antlers, darted past one even, ing, just beyond rifle range. Specimens, presumed to be of silver ore, were broken from extensive ledges and brought ia. Society has a few rules about smoking. You should never smoke in another person's house without leave, and you should not ask leave to do so if there are ladies in the house. When you are going to smoke a cigar yourself, you should offer one at the same time to anybody present. You should always smoke a cigar given to you, whether good or I bad, aud never make any remarks on its l quality. " /
