RIVERTON.

(feomotjr owx co-respondent) Last night, Mr Bell, late manager of the Bank of Otago here, was entertained at a farewell dinner, by n number of his friends and fellow-townsmen. He has now ior some years p;ist resided among us, anJ hus succeeded in gaining the esteem and respect of all with whom he came in contact. Being a thorough wan of business, and keenly alive to the interests of the town in which he has dwelt so long, his departure is felt to be a public loss. The good wishes of the .community for his welfare were most appropriately expressed at the dinner, ! which was given in Mr Longford's Commercial Hotel. Upwards of forty gentlemen sat down ; tl.e chair being occupied i by Mr Petchell, and the vice-chair jj by !Mr Theophilus Daniel. A very pleasant evening was passed, enlivened by some excellent songs, aud a number of appropriate toasts, by various uentlemen present. The toast of " The Fairer Sex" : was received with particular enthusiasm, being celebrated with bumpers, and " three times three." Mr Longford spared neither time nor pains in the ' arrangements, which w< re most successful in every respect. The company did not separate till an early hour. At the JEioad Board meeting which was organized in South Riverton on Tuesday last, Messrs Petchell, Frew, and Grew were duly elected, and it is to be hoped some benefit to the district may arise from their exertions, ?a the present condition of the roads leaves ample room fur improvement
