The Treasurer announced that the £30,000 imprest for defence, granted to the last Ministry, had been expended, and large liabilities were outstanding ; while of the imprest of £100,000 from the consolidated fund only £12,000 were left. The House then adjourned till Tuesday, when Mr Stafford promises to inaUe the Ministerial Statement. i. Sept. 11 It is rumored that Mr Moorhouse will

resign his appointment aa RegistrarGeneral of Lands in order to contest the election for Egmont (MrGKsborne's seat). Mr Waterhouse, at the last moment, declined a seat in the Cabinet. _ Mr Hall is spoken of as the representative of the G-overn'nent in the Legislative Council. Mr Kelly has given notice of the following motion : — That in the opinion of this House only two classes of railways should be constructed : (1) railways the revenues of which will be sufficient to pay the annual charge on account of working expenses, maintenance, and interest ; (2) railways which for the first few years will not produce sufficient revenue to meet those charges, but which may be considered necessary, and the expenditure for which is justifiable on account of the large areas of agricultural and mineral lands which they will open up for settlement ; and that with respect to the second class or type of construei tion, the annual liabilities incurred on their account which their traffic receipts 'fail to provide for, shall be charged on the land revenue of the province within which they are constructed, and if the land revenue is insufficient to meet the deficiency, the balance shall be made up out of the Colonial revenue. Sept 12. The following have announced themselves as candidates for the representation of Egmoiit in the House of Representatives : — Major Atkinson, Messrs Curtis, W. Carrington, Syme, and Moorhouse.
