DUNEDIN.

Messrs Dbitbb, Stewabt and Co. report for the -week ending 4th, September : — Fat Cattle. — The nnmber yarded to-daj— B2 head — was somewhat in excess of requirements, and hence prices, for ordinary quality especially, ruled easier, and a few head were turned out untold. Cows realised from £5 to £6 lOe, and bullocks £6 10s to £8. Prime quality beef may still be quoted at 25a, ordinary 20s per lOOlbi. Our sales comprise 45 head. Fat Sheep. — 430 were yarded, of which we •old 230. merino wether* at 13s to 13s 6d. Other ■ales were 80 croes-breds at 22s dd, and 120 merinos at 13s. We quote prime mutton at 4£d per Ib. Store Sheep are enquired for, but there are none offering, and we have no transactions to report.

Store CatUe.— There is a steady demand for well grown bullocks and good mixed lota at quotations. We Dlaced sevoral small lots, say, about 90 bead, at 35s to £3 se. Wool. — Our reading of the public telegrams via San Francisco has been in the main confirmed by full advices received via Suez, and later telegrams by the latter route report some improvement in prices. We extract the following from our London agent's advices of 27th June:— " Wool.— The third series of Colonial Wool Sales for the present year commenced on the 20th inst, ■with a good attendance of both Home and Foreign buyers. Biddings were spirited, but prices showed a decline of about Id per lb on the closing rates of May. The last two or three sales have passed off with an additional firmness, owing to increased foreign demand, and should this continue we may hope to see some small improvement in prices. There is a good business doing in the North, and our manufacturers are fully engaged with orders for goods, but their purchases of wool are little more than sufficient to supply immediate wants. The arriTals for these sales comprise 214,051 bales (including 42,116 bales New Zealand), of which about 15,000 bales have been forwarded direct from ship to Yorkshire and the Continent. " Tallow and Hides.— Since our last there hare been two public sales of tallow, at both of which the demand for Australian was limited, and prices have declined fully 6d, the value to-day of good to fine New Zealand mutton being 42s to 42s 6d, and fair beef taUow 41b 6d to 41s 9d per cwt. Hides are unaltered. •• New Zealand Hemp.— The market remains very firm, but supplies are limited, and any lots offering are taken at full prices. 65 bales were offered at auction on the 19th, but only 11 sold, at £37, the remainder being bought in at extreme prices." Sheepskins. — Our sale to-day was well attended, and competition spirited, and every lot catalogued was sold, full prices being realised — viz., for 235 cross-bred skins, 6s to 7s 2d each j 222 merino do, 2» to 5s each. Sided — Only 30 were offered, and sold, all faults, at 6s 6d to 16a each. New Zealand Hemp.— Wo catalogued to-day about 120 bales, but owing to the departure of J the mail, postponed the sale to the 11th inst. Grain. — Wheat continues in fair request, but the business done during the week has been small; prime samples are held for 5s 6d per bushel. Oats are in good demand at Is lid for fair feed, and 2s Id to 2s 2d for milling samples.
