INDIA AND THE EAST.
The Peninsular and Oriental steamer Deecan won the tea race home by a few hours. The steamer Parnassus with tea, racing home from Hankow, was totally lost near Cape Guardafui on 11th July. All hands saved. Eleven of the robbers who boarded the steamer Cashmere in the Persian Gulf, have been captured, and one- third of the treasure recovered. The famine in Persia has subsided, although great poverty still prevails. Tea-planting in Ceylon and Southern India is occupying attention. The Japanese are exporting coal to Shanghai, The library of the lafce Tycoon, with 100.000 volumes, has been opened to the public. Ihe railway from Teddo to Shanawa has been opened, and goods trains are running. The Kioto Exhibition is successful. Some 100 tons of Japanese Temple bells, sold by the priests, have been shipped to England.
