ITALY AND GERMANY.
The Pope threatens agitation and mischief if bis temporal power be not restored, and orders have gone forth that Romish priests are everywhere to take an active part in elections. Fresh efforts are being made to induce the Pope to quit Borne. Merode offers him vast estates near Brussels. The Italian cardinals oppose the proposal. The German Government has applied to the four powers having the right to veto the election of the Pope, with a view to arriving at a common understanding as to the conditions of a future conclave. Three powers are in favor of an agreement. The bill against the Jesuits has been passed by a large majority. Bishop Ermel has since consented to retract the sentence of excommunication against two Old Catholic professors, and the issue of the new pastoral by German bishops is promised. A strike of 20,000 coal miners in Westphalia is attributed to the intrigues of the Papal party with the Internationalists. The Emperor has appointed three Crown lawyers to report on the San Juan boundary question.
