The following later Australian intelligence has been received via Auckland: — Stditet, August 3rd. Parliament will be prorogued next week. The Government withdrew their resolution authorising an arrangement of the Border duties question with Victoria, and will make an arrangement without Parliamentary action. The Government has promised to introduce a bill next session, making the Upper House elective. Fresh discoveries of tin are being made. A splendid lode has been struck in Glen Innes, and stream tin has been found on the Grojdin river. Labor is becoming scarce. The strike of coal miners at Newcastle has virtually terminated. The men held a ballot meeting yesternight, and decided to accept the offer of the mine proprietors. Work will likely be resumed on Monday. The Lambton Co. has raised the price of coal to 9s per ton. Krohman's Co., Tambaroora, crushed 15i tone of picked quartz, which Jyielded 6970 ounces of gold. The seamen's strike continues. The Hero is still in quarantine, but no fresh cases of small pox have occurred. The Government have promised to join the other Australian Governments in erecting an Australian Annexe at the London Exhibition. The Peak Downs Copper Mining Company has declared a dividend at the rate of 200 per cent per annum, and the Ash Company at the rate of 6 per cent, per annum. Breadstuff* are dull. Wheat is at 5s 6d to 6s 4d, and flour at £14 to £15. Twist tobacco is dearer. Iron is £2 higher. Melboukwe. In the Legislative Assembly, the Treasurer stated that it would not be necessary, by the terms of the Californian mail contract, for the Government to submit a resolution to the House refusing to ratify the contract, as it was the intention only of the late Government to ask Parliament to ratify the contract. Mr Duffy gave notice of a question as to the intentions of the Government with reference to mail services. A communication from the AgentGeneral states that the Imperial Government had approved of the Californian mail contract, and would grant a subsidy to the service of £20,000. The sum of £320,000 was set apart for the construction of 84 miles of railway, to be commenced immediately. The Government have resolved to send Captain Small, of the Volunteer Artillery, home for twelve months, to study the art of heavy ordnance gunnery. It fs stated, on the authority of a private letter, that the Hon. Mr Gordon, from the Mauritius, is to be the new Governor of Victoria. The trial of Scott (*' Captain Moonlite ") at Ballarat, for the Egerton bank robbery, lasted several days. He made an able defence, but was sentenced to penal servitude for ten years. A raid was made on Chinese gamblers, and the keepers of the house in which they were found were fined £10. A fire occurred at Glasscock's Horse Bazaar. The damage done is covered by insurance in the Alliance office. In the action brought by Dr Lloyd against the Australian Medical Journal, a verdict was given for the defendant. A libel action brought against the Herald terminated in a verdict of £40 damages. The Mining on Private Property Bill has been read a second time in the Legislative Assembly. Business is quiet. Wheat is at 6s 6d to 7a. Quicksilver is wanted at 4s 6d, but holders ask ss. The Raven brand of tobacco is quoted at Is 7£d. Maize is in brisk demand at 3s 2d. An extreme figure is given for fine qualities of salt. Sugars are enquired for, aud teas command attention. Adelaide. The Parliamentary intelligence is unimportant. There is more enquiry for wheat, for which 5s 9d is offered. Hoba-bt Town. The political crisis continues, Mr Meredith being unable to form a Ministry.
