3*ablic Notices. THE New Zealand Meat Preserving Co. beg to intimate that they will close their Long Bush works about the end of fcliis month. As the- state of the roads renders it impossible to clear the accumulation of manufactured goods, they, have been compelled op this account to close much earlier this season than hitherto. They regret that it was impossible to meet the requirements of all who had stock to dispose of, but trust to be able to resume work as soon as the roads are fit for traffic. They have to thank the public for the liberal support afforded this season, and hope that this ■will be continued in future. Jjong Bush, 20th July, 1872. AUSTEALTAN MUTUAL PEOVIDENT SOCIETY. WALTER H. PEARSON, Immigration Officer. Immigration Office, July 19, 1872. TO THE BATEPATEES OF INVEECAEGILL. /~1 ENTLEMEN, — At the request of a number vT of citizens, lam a candidate at the ensuing election for a seat in the Municipal Council. As I was unavoidably absent on the day of nomination, I take this means of placing before you a statement of my views on questions of immediate interest. The work of forming and metalling our streets, and of carrying out a system of thorough drainage, shonld be the first and constant care of the Council. To effect those objects it will be necessary to borrow. It would be my endeavor to secure a just and prudent expenditure of the money — giving priority to the most populous portions of the town. With respect to the Tay-street Reserve Fundon the disposal of which considerable difference of opinion exists — I see no difficulty, providing the money is used (as the law directs) lor the benefit of all and not of one particular reserve. If the whole sum were expended "on the -swamp," persons living in other parts of the .town would have just cause of complaint, as, probably, no more money will be forthcoming for the improvement of the public reserves. Should these views meet your approval, I respectfully aßk your endorsement of them on the . day of election. . I am, Gentlemen, Yours, &c, J. H. SMITH.
