ITALY.
Vesuvius was in a state of eruption from April 24 to May 2. Rivers of lava poured down the mountain. 40,000 people left their homes ; about 100 perished. Several villages were destroyed, and the whole district desolated. The King was present, stimulating the authorities to render assistance. The priests appealed to the superstitious fears of the people, and said this was a judgment on the nation for its conduct towards the Pope. The Pope has hurled a fresh insult at the German Government by refusing to receive Cardinal Hohenlohe, the liberal German prelate. The German Court is irritated, and a rupture, which may result in the expulsion of the Jesuits, is imminent.
