LADIES' BENEVOLENT SOCIETY.

The following is the report of the Ladies' Benevolent Society, Invercargill, from May Ist, 1871, to May Ist, 1872 :— The committee of the Ladies' Benevolent Society of Invercargill, in presenting this report of their operations during the past year, have to state that relief has been given by them, as in previous years, in many cases of distress and destitution. The nature of these cases, and the amount of relief thus afforded, will be made apparent from the following statement : — 1. Neglected Children. — Four children , have been boarded and educated, three of them during the whole year, and one during eight months of it, at the Society's expense, at the rate of 10s a week per child. 2. Widows. — Three widows have had weekly allowances, in one case during the whole year, in another during three months, and in the third case for one month, at the rate usually of 5s per week each. 3. Single Persona. — One imbecile female has received small weekly allowances during the whole year, and another female for a few weeks. 4. Families. — Nine families hare received weekly allowances, usually at the rate of 5s a week, but in one case only during the whole week, and in most cases for only a short period. In special exigencies, grants for clothing, aicknursing, and similar purposes have also been given. It will thus be seen that a large amount of good is done by the Society, at the smallest cost to the public and the benevolent. It will be seen by reference to the abstract of the Society's accounts, which is appended, that the sum of £3 14s 6d only has been collected from the public during the past year, and this is accounted for by the fact that more than twelve months have elapsed since a general canvass for subscriptions has been made. The committee trust therefore that their nest appeal to the public on behalf of the distressed and destitute will be met by a liberal response.
