RAILWAY TRAFFIC RETURNS.
The following are the Southland railway traffic returns for the month of April : —
Total working expenses for the month, £493 10s Bd.
H. E. Osborne, auctioneer, reports : — The sale of furniture, &c, at the res idence of John Blackloct, Esq., on the Ist and 2nd inst., commanded a large attendance, and every article ■was well competed for. The following are the prices some of the leading lines brought, viz; : — Dining chairs, 18s each ; 100 tables, from £4 5s to £9 ; carpets and rug 3, £2 5s to £10 ; engravings, £1 10s to £2 6s ; plated tea service, £20 ; pianoforte, £41 ; dinner service, £5 5s ; sofas, £4 10s ; hair mattrasses, £2 5s to £4 10s ; pier glass, £9 10s ; chests drawers, £2 10s to £6 10s ; book case, £11 ; mangle, £6 ; lady's saddle, £8 10= ; park phaeton, horse, and harness, £57 10s ; medicine chest, £3 ; unbroken colt, £6. All the kitchen sundries, blankets, books, poultry, bees, &c, brought satisfactory prices. I have closed the sale of a cottage in Jackson street for £100 cash. Efik street, 3rd May, 1872.
T>. Macrorie, auctioneer, reports : — The conclusion, of Messrs Weaven and Co.'s clearing-out sale did not command a large attendance, but the prices realised were for the moßt part satisfactory. The Bpring cart brought £8, American axles, 30s ; pair dray axles, H3a each ; axle arms, 13s each ; vyces, 35s to £2 ; anvil, £3 10s ; bellows, £6 ; seasoned timber at rate of 10s per 100 feet ; chain, 4f i per lb, &c, &c. I have also to report, after treating for two months with the purchaser, the sale of Martendale for the sum of £750, a property the capabilities of which are likely to be brought out in the hands into which it has now fallen, j • Inyercargill, 6th May, 1872.
